For the first nine years of his life, Shane Morasco lived with his single mother, Gigi in Paris, Texas. He had grown up believing his father to be a dead Navy SEAL. He would often make up stories with his father as the hero, however mention of his father seemed to make his mother uncomfortable. Gigi worked in a local diner and the other workers were like a second family to the pair who had no real one. They experienced some difficulty with money and Shane's asthma didn't help matters much as it often required his mother to miss work and could even put him in the hospital.
Little did they know that two new workers at the diner would change their lives. When Viki Davidson came to work at the diner, "Sally Ann" - who was truly Marcie McBain wasn't far behind, though it was unintentionally. Gigi first believed Sally Ann to be an abused woman on the run with her child, so she decided to help her. She would later discover Sally Ann's real name and the fact that her son was actually a child she had adopted and then lost custody of to his biological father, Marcie had kidnapped baby Tommy.
Around this same time, Rex Balsom came to town and it was discovered that Rex and Gigi used to know each other. They had been high-school sweethearts and he had left town without telling her. Gigi had something she almost told him, but upon hearing of his girlfriend she changed her mind. She then tried to prevent Rex from seeing her son. Gigi continued to help Marcie even after she knew the truth and this lead to Shane being kidnapped by Todd Manning, baby Tommy's biological father and an insane ex-FBI agent. Shane was returned un-harmed and plus video games, though Gigi was then threatened in front of him to make him talk. Both him and his mother were able to get away.
When Marcie was arrested, John McBain showed up and convinced Gigi to come to Llanview to testify for her. The beginnings of life in Llanview were not very pleasant and the planned to return, but were blackmailed by the ex-FBI agent, Lee Ramsey, to stay in town. Ramsey even made an attempt on Shane's life but he was saved by both Todd Manning and John McBain. Rex began to spend time with Gigi and seemed to instantly adore Shane, though his girlfriend Adriana hated them both. Gigi seemed uncomfortable with Rex and Shane interacting and it didn't take long for Adriana to notice this. Adding that fact with Shane's resemblance to Rex, she asked Gigi if Rex was the child's father. Gigi denied this and named Brody Lovett as Shane's father. She felt so guilty afterwards, that she then tried to confess to Rex that he was in fact the father of her son, but Rex had earphones on and didn't hear her. When Adriana walked in, Gigi decided to keep up the lie.
Rex continued to spend a lot of time with Gigi and Shane. Shane grew to adore Rex as well, and didn't understand why he had to do things like hide his birth date from the man. An infuriated Adriana then began to look up Shane's father and discovered a very much alive - and very much a drunk - Brody Lovett. Adrianna tracked the man down bribed him to come to Llanview, when he arrived he informed her that he was not Shane's father, Rex was. The day of Rex and Adriana's wedding Shane suffered a severe asthma attack and his inhaler could not be found. Rex showed up and helped to look and ended up holding Shane in his arms and was able to temporarily calm the child down. The attack continued though and they took Shane to the hospital. When Shane was taken back, Rex revealed yet another similarity between him and Shane - he had suffered from childhood asthma as well.
Shane quickly recovered and they all made it to the wedding - though late. When Gigi interrupted to declare her love for Rex, Adriana punched her in the face and Shane threatened to kill the woman if she ever touched his mother again. Just as she was about to reveal that Rex was Shane's father, Brody walked in and Shane saw the father had grown up thinking was dead. A stunned Gigi said nothing more and the wedding continued. Shane was thrilled that his "dad" was alive. Brody agreed that even though he knew Rex was Shane's father, he would take over the role as he had promised years ago before he left to join the Navy. He began to spend a lot of time with Shane and even grew to love him.
Adriana and Rex's marriage quickly fell apart as the things she had done came to light and she attempted to perform a secret DNA test. She managed to cover up her true intentions with the test, however it was not enough and she left for France. Rex quickly fell in love with Gigi, though she continued to lie to him about Shane. As Shane became even closer to Brody, it began to become clearer that something was slightly off with the man. He attacked Shane when the boy startled him, though he was able to cover it up as a game and he was caught giving the young boy beer. During this time, Rex and shortly there-after, Gigi managed to transport themselves back in time and were only returned when Gigi confessed that Rex was Shane's father.
When they got back, they discovered that Brody had used Rex's DNA to fake a test declaring him Shane's father. Brody began to tell Shane that Rex wanted to take Shane away from him, causing the child to become angry with Rex. When Gigi told Brody that she was going to tell Shane the truth, he snapped. Though Shane didn't realize it, he kidnapped him and took him to Llantano Mountain. While teaching Shane how to fire a gun he began to have flashback as we discovered that he had killed a child in Iraq and was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He began behaving more and more strangely until he came to the point where he grabbed Shane and began ranting about how he would never hurt him, at this point he began to slighting scare Shane.
When the police showed up Brody used Shane, who he had been hugging, as a human shield and pointed his gun at them. Confused, Shane yelled at the police officers as he had no idea why they were there. They told him the weren't trying to hurt his dad, but he didn't not believe them. Shane began reciting back gun safety rules Brody had taught them and said that you aren't supposed to point a gun at something you aren't willing to destroy. He finally convinced them to lower their guns and Brody told Shane to go to Gigi and Rex, who were waiting off to the side. At first Shane refused, saying if he left the police would shoot Brody, but the man insisted and so Shane went to his mother.
With Shane gone, Brody began losing his grip on reality even faster and randomly fired a shot in the direction of Gigi and Shane. Rex threw himself in front of Shane and Gigi and took a bullet for them. When they got to the hospital, Gigi finally told Shane that Rex was his father but Shane did not believe her at first after all Brody had told him. He worked himself up to the point where he has issues breathing, but he was finally convinced, though he wasn't happy about it, insisting that Brody was his real father. Shane ran off to go see Brody at the police station and quickly discovered there was something wrong with Brody. Shortly after he returned to the hospital, Roxy decided to spend time with her newly-discovered grandson and Bo rescued the child from the woman who was beginning to freak him out. After a long talk with Bo, Shane became slightly more exceptive of the idea that Rex was his father.
Rex, however, remained in a coma. As his divorce from Adriana was not yet final, she returned to stack one last claim to him, refusing to allow Gigi to see him. When she discover Shane legally had a right to see his father, she hid Rex away. Gigi however, found out where he was and when she came to him, he woke up. Adriana saw this and finally agreed to finalize the divorce and go back to France. Shane later had a sleep over with Matthew Buchanan who told Shane his own tail of discovering his biological father late in life and reminded Shane of how much he liked Rex. Gigi took Shane to go see Brody at a Veterans hospital, while there she thanked Brody for being there for Shane and said she did not blame him. When Shane saw him Brody gave him one of him medal's and they had a long talk. By the end of it, Brody had convinced Shane to fully except the fact that his father was Rex. When Shane walked out Rex was waiting, Shane let him know by his friendliness that he was willing to give him a chance.
As time went on, Shane once again became very close to Rex and grew to love having him as a father. As Christmas approached, Rex discovered that his son's past Christmas had been less then indulgent and decided to give Shane the best Christmas he could. So he went on a mission to find the one thing Shane wanted most, a Z-Box. However, no matter where he looked he could not find one. Come Christmas day Shane had more presents the he had probably ever had in his life but he kept asking where the Z-Box was, as he seemed to now believe his father could do anything. Rex sat him down and explained what happened, and Shane shocked everyone by simply smiling and saying it was ok, he had a wonderful Christmas anyway. Suddenly, Dorian Lord came to the door with a wrapped present for Shane, saying her nephew Jack had ended up with two of whatever it was. When Shane unwrapped it, he discovered it was a Z-Box.
Shane's relationship with his father grew even stronger over the next couple of months, leading to him getting his hair cut in a replica of his father's style. When Shane's aunt Stacy, who he had never before known showed up in town he began to form a bond with her as well. Stacy, however was plotting to break up his parents as she wanted her sister's boyfriend for herself. Her scheming led to her arranging a sleep over for Shane but hiding his inhaler. When Gigi discovered it was missing, they turned around to go home and were hit by a very high Cole Thornhart. Though, neither were badly injured they were trapped in the car and Shane began having an asthma attack, John McBain soon rescued Shane and called 911. Once the paramedic's arrived Shane's asthma attack was treated and all he wanted was his father. Stacy had other plans though as she had drugged Rex and turned off his phone. Sadly, the accident resulted in Shane's friend Matthew, who was in the other car, being paralyzed from the waist down.
When they finally got home, Gigi sent Shane to bed and discovered what Stacy had been up to. A very out of it Rex, who had recently been unconscious jumped to attention and ran from the room in his underwear to check on his son when he heard what had happened. The next day Rex went to the hospital for a blood test to prove Stacy had drugged him. When he came back he spent some time with Shane and helped convince him to go to school. When he went back for the results he saw Michael with a chart and pulled it from his hands, assuming it was his. What he saw shocked him. It was not his results, but his son's. The chart revealed that Shane had Leukemia.
Shane was terrified when he was told of his illness, but after a pep talk from his parents he declared he was going to fight. Shane never left the hospital after being told he had cancer and he began chemotherapy immediately and because of how advanced his illness was, a search for a bone marrow match began immediately as well. A drive was held for him and much of the town was tested. When Roxy found out about his illness she went to visit Rex's mysterious father who was in a coma and took a swab of his cheek so he could be tested as well.
When Shane realized he would lose his hair, he had Roxy shave his head. However, he was upset to no longer look like his father. So, to make his son happy, Rex shaved his head as well. Shane tried to be brave, but revealed to Brody just how scared he was and that he was afraid he would die. He also often worried about his friend Matthew and once declared that if Matthew could handle being paralyzed, he could handle being bald and having cancer. Roxy did her best to keep Shane in good spirits, once bringing in a wig and dressing Shane up like a "rock star".
A match was found in another state, but it soon fell through when the donor found out she was pregnant, devastating Shane and his parents. When the tests came back, it was revealed that the only match in town was Shane's mysterious grandfather. Stacy found out and made a deal with Roxy that she would pretend to be the match. She then blackmailed Gigi, telling her that if she did not break up with Rex, she would allow Shane to die. Gigi met with Brody and together they made it look as though she had cheated on Rex. Once they broke up, Stacy agreed to do the transplant.
With a very complicated plan, Stacy's stem cells were swapped with the coma patients and Shane received the transplant, but not with out Schuyler - a teacher who used to date Stacy - becoming suspicious. After the transplant, Shane was informed of his parents break-up and was devastated. Shortly after finally being sent home, he moved in with Rex as Stacy had told him why his parents broke up. He eventually moved back with his mother but Stacy put a stop to any way he or Rex could possibly find out what she had done.
Though Schuyler, Brody and Gigi were trying to prove what Stacy did, Rex and Shane remained very mad at Gigi and Brody. Shane joined a band at the community center and was playing drums. On the night of his first performance, Matthew showed up and they were able to get Matthew to play the keyboard in the band with Shane. Not long afterwords, all that Stacy had done was revealed and Shane and his parents were happy - but not for long. Stacy soon revealed that she was pregnant with Rex's baby - which she soon miscarried. Not one to give up, she got pregnant again as fast as possible and continued to declare she was having Rex's baby. Shane was devastated at the continued connection to the woman who had been willing to let him die. Shane's happy family once again became very strained.
When Rex had to leave town to help Natalie over Halloween, on Roxy's suggestion Schuyler took Rex's place for their group costume and took Gigi and Shane to a party. Unknown to anyone else, Schuyler and Gigi were begining to feel atracted to each other. Shortly afterwords, it was revealed that the myterious grandfather who had saved Shane's life was none other then the evil Mitch Laurence. Shane was upset at first, but his parents were able to calm him down. When Shane caught Schuyler and his mother together he was anything but happy and when Rex found out he began to consider going for full custody of Shane, but never went through with it.
Shortly afterwords, Shane's grandfather began to cause chaos in town and Shane was sent out of town along with his cousin Bree for their safety. Family friend Bo and his girlfriend Nora took the children away to protect them. While Mitch Laurence held his reign of terror, Shane remained safely away. However, while Shane was on a plane headed home after Mitch was caught, Bo was given the task of informing Shane that Stacy's baby had been born, but Stacy had drowned. Shane did not know how to feel about the news, as he had hated his aunt for the things she had done to him and his family, but he had never truely wanted her to die. Shane was sad when his father told him that Sierra Rose was not his sister, but quickly accepted that she was still his cousin and she still needed him because she didn't have a mother anymore.
It wasn't very long before it was revealed that Mitch Lawrence was not Shane's real grandfather - and that Roxy was not his biological grandmother either. The search began again for Rex's parents and it led to Rex and Gigi reuniting. After a long wild goose chase it was finally revealed that Shane's grandmother was a woman named Echo DiSavoy and his grandfather was one of two men: Charlie Banks or Clint Buchanan. While Charlie was excepting of the idea, it was obvious that Clint wanted nothing to do with Rex and his family. Everyone was happy when a DNA test revealed that Charlie was Rex's father, though Shane asked if they were sure he really was, saying that he just gave up if it wasn't Charlie.
Things seemed to be going well for Shane until it was revealed that he was being bullied. A group of teenagers led by someone with the screenname 'WhoDaMann' were posting mean messages on Shane's MyFace page, often including photoshopped pictures mocking him for his asthma. When Echo discovered the messages, Shane begged her not to tell anyone, saying that if the adults got involved things would only get worse and the bullies would get board soon anyway. Echo gave in and kept Shane's secret. It was soon revealed that Clint had paid someone to switch the results of the DNA test and Clint was actually Rex's father. The next day Shane was in school, it was shown that Shane was still being bullied and that the leader was Jack Manning. When Matthew walked by, Shane called out to him for help, saying that Matthew was his cousin. Matthew, who had begun to see Clint as a mentor, told Shane that he did not know what he was talking about and left him to the bullies. Jack then taunted Shane and told him to hit him, when Shane did, a teacher saw and Shane ended up being the one to get in trouble.
